Choosing the right WC for a bathroom may seem like a simple decision, but there are several types available today. The size of your bathroom, the layout, cleaning needs and the overall look you want can all affect your choice.
From a one piece WC to a wall hung WC, each type has its own faeatures. Some work well in compact bathrooms, while others are better suited to larger spaces.
In this guide, we will look at the common types of WC, how they are different and what you should consider before choosing one for your bathroom.
What Is a WC?
WC stands for Water Closet. It is another term commonly used for a toilet area or toilet fixture.
Today, WCs come in different designs and installation styles. The two common options are floor-mounted and wall-hung models. You can also find one-piece and two-piece designs.
The right choice depends on your bathroom layout and your everyday requirements.
Types of WC You Can Choose From
There is no single WC design that works for every bathroom. Different homes have different space and plumbing requirements.
The main types include:
-
One-piece WC
-
Two-piece WC
-
Floor-mounted WC
-
Wall-hung WC
Some designs may also combine these features. For example, a one-piece WC can be floor-mounted, while a wall-hung model has a different installation system.
Let's look at each type in more detail.
One-Piece WC
A one piece WC has the tank and bowl made as one connected unit. There is no separate tank that needs to be joined to the bowl during installation.
One-piece designs have a simple and neat appearance. They can work well in modern bathrooms where you want fewer visible joints.
Another useful point is cleaning. Since the design has fewer joins between the main parts, there are fewer small areas where dust and dirt can collect.
A one-piece model can be a good option if you want:
-
A clean and simple bathroom look
-
Fewer visible joints
-
Easy everyday cleaning
-
A modern design
However, always check the available bathroom space and the product dimensions before making a decision.
Two-Piece WC
A two-piece WC has a separate tank and bowl. The two parts are connected during installation.
This is a familiar design and is available in many sizes and styles. It can be suitable for different bathroom layouts and is often considered when replacing an existing WC.
Because the tank and bowl are separate, the installation process is different from a one-piece design.
When choosing between one-piece and two-piece models, consider the available space, installation requirements, design preference and cleaning needs.
Floor-Mounted WC
A floor mounted WC is fixed directly to the bathroom floor. It is one of the most commonly seen installation types.
It can work well in bathrooms where the existing plumbing is designed for a floor-mounted installation. This can make it a practical option when replacing an older fixture without making major changes to the bathroom layout.
Floor-mounted designs are available in different shapes and sizes, so you can choose one according to the space available.
They can be suitable when:
-
Your existing plumbing is floor-based
-
You want a familiar installation style
-
The bathroom has enough floor space
-
You are replacing an existing floor-mounted model
Before installation, check the outlet position and dimensions carefully.
Wall-Hung WC
A wall hung WC is fixed to the wall rather than sitting directly on the bathroom floor. Its supporting frame and cistern are usually concealed behind the wall or inside a suitable installation system.
One of the main visual benefits is the open floor area below the WC. This can make the bathroom look cleaner and less crowded.
The open space can also make floor cleaning easier because there is less around the base of the fixture.
A wall-hung WC can be useful for:
-
Modern bathroom designs
-
Compact spaces
-
Creating a more open floor area
-
Easier access to the floor for cleaning
However, installation needs to be planned properly because the supporting system and plumbing have to be suitable for the wall-hung setup.
Floor-Mounted vs Wall-Hung WC
The biggest difference is how the WC is installed.
A floor-mounted WC rests on the floor, while a wall-hung WC is supported by a frame fixed to the wall. This difference also changes the appearance of the bathroom.
A wall-hung design can give the room a more open appearance because the floor underneath remains visible. A floor-mounted design, on the other hand, may be easier to consider when you already have floor-based plumbing in place.
There is no need to choose one simply because it looks more modern. Think about your bathroom structure first.
Which WC Is Better for a Small Bathroom?
A small bathroom needs careful planning because every inch of space matters.
A wall hung WC can make a compact bathroom feel more open because the floor below it remains clear. This can also make the bathroom easier to clean.
However, the size of the WC itself is still important. A large fixture can make a small bathroom uncomfortable, even if it is wall-mounted.
When choosing for a small bathroom, check:
-
Overall WC dimensions
-
Available space around the fixture
-
Door and shower positions
-
Plumbing requirements
-
Available installation space
Do not choose a model based only on appearance. Make sure it fits comfortably into the actual bathroom layout.
What Should You Check Before Buying a WC?
Choosing a WC is easier when you check a few practical points before making the final decision.
1. Bathroom Size
Measure the available area first. Check the width, depth and height of the space where the WC will be installed.
2. Plumbing
Your existing plumbing can affect which model is suitable. If you are changing from one installation type to another, additional work may be required.
3. Cleaning
Think about how easy it will be to clean around and behind the fixture. Designs with fewer difficult-to-reach areas can make regular cleaning simpler.
4. Design
Choose a shape and style that works with the rest of your bathroom. A modern bathroom can look more organised when the WC, basin and other fixtures have a similar overall style.
5. Installation
Different WC designs have different installation requirements. For a wall-hung model, the supporting frame and concealed system need proper planning.
How to Choose the Right WC for Your Bathroom
Start by looking at the bathroom rather than the product.
If you are working with an existing bathroom, check the current plumbing and available space. If you are building a new bathroom, you have more freedom to plan the layout around the fixtures.
For a compact bathroom, a wall-hung design may help create a more open appearance. If you want a simple and neat product with fewer visible joints, a one-piece WC can be considered.
For a more traditional installation, a floor mounted WC may be suitable.
The important thing is to choose a product that fits both your bathroom and your daily needs.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Regular cleaning is important for every WC, regardless of the design.
Clean the bowl and surrounding areas regularly using products suitable for the surface. Also pay attention to areas around the base, joints and flush system.
For wall-hung models, the open floor underneath can make floor cleaning easier. For one-piece designs, the reduced number of joints can also make everyday cleaning more straightforward.
Always follow the manufacturer's cleaning and maintenance instructions to avoid damaging the surface or fittings.
Conclusion
There are several types of WC available today, and the right one depends on your bathroom size, plumbing, installation requirements and personal preferences.
A one piece WC can offer a simple and clean appearance, while a floor mounted WC can be a practical choice for many existing bathroom layouts. A wall hung WC can help create a more open look and leave more floor space visible.
Before choosing, take proper measurements and understand your plumbing requirements. Think about cleaning, comfort and long-term use as well. With a suitable WC and the right bathroom layout, you can create a space that is comfortable, practical and easy to maintain.
