A bathroom should be comfortable and easy to use for everyone. But the needs of a young child, an older person, or someone with limited movement can be very different. This is why accessibility should be considered when planning a bathroom, especially when the same space will be used by people of different ages.
An accessible bathroom does not have to look like a hospital bathroom. With the right sanitaryware, faucets, shower and other fittings, it can still look simple and modern while being easier and safer to use.
The key is to think about everyday activities and make them as easy as possible.
What Makes a Bathroom Accessible?
An accessible bathroom is designed around easy movement, comfortable use and safety. The layout should give people enough space to enter, move around and use the different fixtures without difficulty.
Before selecting products, look at the bathroom as a whole. The position of the door, basin, WC, shower and storage can all affect how easy the room is to use.
A few basic things to consider are:
-
Enough open space to move around
-
Easy-to-reach bathroom fixtures
-
Good lighting
-
Suitable flooring
-
Safe and comfortable shower access
These points are useful for everyone, not only people with mobility challenges.
Choose Sanitaryware With Comfort in Mind
Sanitaryware is one of the most important parts of an accessible bathroom. The fixtures should be selected according to the people who will use them.
For older users, getting up and sitting down can sometimes be difficult. A suitable WC height can make this everyday activity more comfortable. The same applies to the basin. It should be positioned at a height that allows comfortable use without unnecessary bending or stretching.
The size of each fixture also matters. A large basin may look good but can reduce the available movement space in a small bathroom.
When planning sanitaryware, think about both comfort and the available space.
Make the Shower Area Safer
The shower is an area where water on the floor can increase the risk of slipping. This makes shower planning particularly important.
A shower area with easy access can be more comfortable for older people and users with limited movement. Avoid unnecessary steps or raised edges where possible, depending on the bathroom structure and drainage.
A hand shower can also be useful because it gives the user more control over where the water goes. An overhead shower can be used as well, but the final setup should depend on the needs of the people using the bathroom.
Other useful considerations include:
-
Keep the shower entrance easy to access.
-
Choose flooring that provides suitable grip when wet.
-
Keep frequently used shower products within easy reach.
-
Provide enough space to move comfortably.
Choose Easy-to-Use Faucets
Faucets are used several times every day, so they should not be difficult to operate.
For an accessible bathroom, a single lever faucet can be a practical option. It allows the user to control water flow and temperature with one handle.
This can be easier than turning separate handles, particularly for children or people who have difficulty with hand movement.
The position of the faucet is also important. It should be easy to reach without forcing the user to lean too far over the basin.
Simple controls are generally easier for everyone to understand and use.
Plan the Bathroom for Children Too
Accessibility is not only about older people. Children also need a bathroom that is safe and easy to use.
Young children may have difficulty reaching high fixtures or controlling taps. The bathroom should therefore be planned with their height and movement in mind.
Parents can also keep everyday products at a suitable height and avoid leaving slippery items on the floor.
Good lighting is another important part of a child-friendly bathroom. Children should be able to clearly see the floor, fixtures and shower area.
As children grow, their needs will change. A flexible bathroom layout can make it easier to adjust the space later.
Give Enough Space to Move Around
One of the most important parts of accessible bathroom planning is movement.
A bathroom can have excellent fixtures but still be uncomfortable if there is not enough space between them. Try to avoid placing large cabinets, baskets or other items where they block the main walking area.
The door should also open and close without making movement difficult.
Before finalising the layout, think about how someone would enter the bathroom, reach the basin, use the WC and move towards the shower.
This simple exercise can help identify problems before installation.
Think About the WC Area
The WC should be positioned in a way that provides enough space around it. This is especially important when the bathroom is being planned for older users or people with mobility limitations.
The height of the WC can also affect comfort. A suitable height may make sitting down and standing up easier for some users.
If additional support is required, grab bars or other suitable support systems can be considered. Their position should be planned carefully so they are actually useful and do not get in the way.
The exact requirements can vary depending on the user's needs, so professional advice may be useful for a more specialised accessible bathroom.
Use Good Lighting
Poor lighting can make a bathroom harder to use and can increase the chance of accidents.
The main bathroom area should have enough light, while the basin and shower areas should also be clearly visible.
Avoid creating dark corners, especially around the floor and entrance.
A well-lit mirror area can also make everyday activities easier. If possible, use lighting that gives clear visibility without creating uncomfortable glare.
Keep the Floor Safe
Bathroom floors can become slippery when wet. This is an important concern for children, older people and anyone who has difficulty with balance.
Choose flooring that is suitable for wet areas and maintain it properly. Water should also drain away properly instead of remaining on the floor.
Try to keep unnecessary mats, baskets and other objects out of the main walking path. These can become obstacles, especially in a small bathroom.
Make Storage Easy to Reach
Storage should also be planned around accessibility.
Frequently used products should not be kept too high or too low. Towels, soap and other everyday items can be placed where they are easy to reach.
Wall-mounted shelves can help save floor space while keeping products organised. However, avoid installing shelves at a height that requires users to stretch or climb.
For children, keep their everyday items within safe reach. For older users, avoid making them bend down repeatedly to pick up things they use every day.
Consider the Bathroom for Different Ages
When a bathroom is shared by a family, it can be difficult to design it specifically for one person.
A better approach is to create a flexible space that works for different users.
For example, a comfortable WC, easy-to-use faucets, a practical shower setup and good storage can benefit children, adults and older people alike.
The bathroom should also be easy to maintain. Simple layouts and easy-to-clean surfaces can reduce the amount of effort needed for regular cleaning.
How Bathroom Fixtures Can Improve Accessibility
The right fixtures can make everyday activities more comfortable.
A well-positioned basin can reduce unnecessary bending. An easy-to-operate faucet can make controlling water simpler. A hand shower can give users more control, while suitable sanitaryware can improve comfort.
However, no single product can make a bathroom accessible on its own. The layout, fixture placement, floor, lighting and storage all need to work together.
This is why it is better to plan the complete bathroom instead of choosing each product separately.
Conclusion
Planning an accessible bathroom starts with a simple idea: make the space easy and comfortable for the people who use it.
Think about movement, fixture height, shower access, faucet operation, lighting, flooring and storage before making your choices. These details can make a bathroom safer for children, more comfortable for older users and easier to use for everyone.
A well-planned bathroom does not need to sacrifice style for accessibility. With suitable sanitaryware, faucets, showers and other bathroom fittings, you can create a space that looks modern while meeting the everyday needs of different users.
